Spotlight on... Sue Lea

Seeing the students progress both academically and socially is easily the most rewarding part of my job.

Our staff are our greatest asset, and it is with their expertise, passion and teamwork that we can work together to build a community of successful learners. Join us as we shine a spotlight on members of staff across our academies, as they share their experiences and professional journeys within a THAT academy.

School:
The Howard School

Job Role:
Higher Level Teaching Assistant

"I have been at The Howard School for 14 years, where I joined as a Teaching Assistant, later progressing on to a HLTA role. My role usually involves providing Literacy, Numeracy and 1:1 Interventions to students in Years 7-9, where I provide a targeted and structured educational programme to help students who may need additional support. I also provide school laptops for the same year groups, whilst creating a 'safe haven' for students who may not be able to access the larger school site (for example, students with limited mobility, perhaps recovering from operations, or using crutches), in order that they can continue their lessons online.

Seeing the students progress both academically and socially is easily the most rewarding part of my job. Working within the SEN department is very much a team effort, and we always work together to share useful information regarding the wellbeing of our students, and how we may be able to provide better support. I have been able to share my own ideas with other staff at Trust Conference Days, which are a fantastic opportunity for us to come together and learn from each other.

My spouse and I have joined the Benenden Health scheme, which is a work benefit provided by THAT. Benenden Health is a private healthcare provider, subsidised by the Trust, providing access to 24/7 GP and Mental Health helplines, Private Medical Diagnosis and Treatments, and Mental Health Counselling Support.

Over my 14 years working at The Howard School, I have also been able to take various online courses, and hear from external speakers on topics relating to SEN, such as Developmental Language Disorder, ELSA training and SaLT. These opportunities have helped me to further develop my skills as a HLTA."
