School:
The Rowans AP Academy
Job Role:
Interventions, Inclusions and Mental Health Lead
"I have been at The Rowans for 10 years! There is no typical day, everyday is varied which is why it is enjoyable and sometimes overwhelming!
My favourite thing about working at The Rowans AP is the relationships I build with the pupils. It’s not just about delivering lessons or following a routine, it’s about those individual connections. I really value the moments when a pupil who might usually struggle to engage begins to open up, or when trust starts to build over time. Being able to support pupils on a 1:1 basis, help them develop their emotional literacy, and guide them towards meeting their personal targets is incredibly rewarding.
What stands out most to me are the small but meaningful breakthroughs. Whether it’s a pupil attending a lesson they would normally avoid, engaging in a conversation, or managing their emotions more positively, those moments feel significant. I enjoy seeing their progress over time, especially when they begin to believe in their own ability to succeed.
For me, it’s about making a difference, being someone consistent and supportive for young people who need that stability. Knowing that I’ve played even a small part in their development is what makes the role so worthwhile.
If I had to put it into one line, I’d say: It’s the impact you have on young people who really need someone in their corner.
I am well-supported by both colleagues and my fellow leadership team at The Rowans AP, which enables me to carry out my role effectively and with confidence. On a day-to-day basis, fellow staff are approachable, collaborative, and always willing to offer advice or step in when needed. There is a strong sense of teamwork, particularly when managing challenging situations, and I feel comfortable seeking guidance or sharing concerns. Colleagues regularly check in with one another, share strategies, and work together to ensure consistency in supporting pupils.
The leadership team provide clear direction and are visible and accessible within the setting. They offer ongoing guidance, particularly around behaviour management, safeguarding, and supporting pupils with additional needs. I feel that I can approach my fellow leadership team with any concerns or questions, and they respond in a supportive and constructive manner.
There are also opportunities for professional development, both formal and informal, which help me to build my skills and confidence in supporting students effectively. Feedback is provided in a helpful and encouraging way, allowing me to reflect on and improve my practice.
Overall, the support I receive from both colleagues and leadership creates a positive working environment where I feel valued, supported, and able to provide the best possible outcomes for the pupils."
It’s the impact you have on young people who really need someone in their corner.
