The Rowans has been rated Strong Standard across all areas in its recent Ofsted inspection under the new report‑card framework.
Inspectors recognised the consistent strength of the Academy’s provision, highlighting its trauma‑informed approach, inclusive culture and the positive impact it has on children and young people who have experienced significant barriers to education.
The Rowans is a dual‑phase secondary alternative provision and primary SEN academy, supporting pupils in Key Stages 1–4 through highly personalised pathways. With a strong focus on relationships, belonging and resilience, the school enables pupils to re‑engage with learning, rebuild confidence and make positive progress towards their next steps.
Ofsted noted the school’s strong curriculum and teaching, its calm and respectful environment, improving attendance, and pupils’ positive attitudes to learning, despite many arriving with disrupted educational experiences.
Under Ofsted’s updated inspection framework, introduced in late 2025, schools are graded across individual areas rather than receiving an overall judgement. The Rowans achieved Strong Standard in every category, exceeding the expected standard throughout.
Inspectors commented that “this is a highly inclusive school where staff are ambitious for all pupils” and where “the school values of kindness, commitment and resilience are actively lived out by pupils.” They complimented the staff body, noting that they “are committed to changing the future life chances of all pupils who attend the school” and “have a deep understanding of pupils and their individual needs.”
It was also noted that “for many pupils, attending The Rowans gives them their first positive experience of school and education.”
Fiona May, Principal, said:
“This outcome reflects the commitment and dedication of our staff team and the determination of our children and pupils. At The Rowans, we believe relationships change lives and that the alternative is not inferior. I am delighted that this report recognises the difference that highly inclusive, trauma‑informed practice makes every day for our pupils and their families.”
Owen McColgan, Chief Executive of The Howard Academy Trust, added:
“The Rowans sets a powerful example of high‑quality alternative provision. This inspection outcome reflects a school that lives its values of kindness, commitment and resilience every day, ensuring pupils are supported to rebuild confidence and succeed. I am immensely proud of the work that happens at The Rowans and proud that it is a member of The Howard Academy Trust”
The Rowans AP Academy joined The Howard Academy Trust in February 2025.
