School:
The Rowans AP Academy

Job Role:
Head of Primary Provision

I was initially employed as Primary SEMH Lead Teacher when the school first opened in September 2023, was then promoted to Assistant Headteacher and now I am Head of Primary Provision working under Fiona May – The Rowans Principal.

Every day starts with a quick check-in with the team, a look at the plan for the day, and making some last minute changes together, because things can always change. One of the best parts of the day is welcoming the children in, helping everyone feel settled, safe and ready to learn. From there, no two days are ever the same and that is what makes it so enjoyable.

Throughout the day there is always something going on. Staff are supporting each other, children are sharing their learning, and there are lots of opportunities for conversations, whether that is celebrating successes or helping someone work through a challenging moment.

In between spending time with the children, I head to my office and complete lots of different tasks, from checking attendance and responding to messages, to working closely with families and making sure everyone is supported. It is busy, but it is a shared effort, and I am fortunate to have a strong and supportive team.

I feel really lucky to be part of such a supportive and skilled team.

The best part of working in teaching is seeing the children grow, not just academically, but as people. Watching their confidence build, seeing them start to believe in themselves, and celebrating those small wins that turn into big progress is incredibly rewarding. What makes it even more special is knowing that some of our children have not always had the easiest start. Seeing them form positive friendships, share their learning with pride, and genuinely begin to enjoy school again is amazing. Being part of that journey, alongside a supportive and caring team, is what makes this job so meaningful every single day.

Working within a Trust provides regular opportunities to work with colleagues from other academies. This includes attending meetings to share ideas and initiatives, as well as working alongside staff from other primary schools within the Trust. These opportunities allow for the sharing of strategies, expertise and resources, and support a consistent approach across schools.

I feel really lucky to be part of such a supportive and skilled team. Everyone brings something different, and there is a real sense that every voice matters and contributes to how our school runs. There is always someone to share ideas with, ask for advice, or simply have a chat when you need it. It never feels like you are on your own. I have been incredibly fortunate to be supported by Fiona May and Caron Johnson, who have played such an important role in my journey into leadership. I am really grateful for the encouragement, guidance and trust they have shown me. It is a team that genuinely looks out for each other, and that makes a huge difference day to day.
